Feeding Raw Dog Food? Here's the Safety Tips

Ensuring the safety of both pets and humans when handling raw pet food is essential. To prevent contamination and cross-contamination, following standard food safety practices is crucial. Here are some guidelines to adhere to:

  1. Separate Foods: Raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs should be kept separate from other foods to prevent cross-contamination. Use separate cutting boards and store raw pet food separately from human-grade food in the fridge.

  2. Wash Produce Only: Avoid washing raw meat under water, as it increases the risk of bacterial spread. Instead, wash raw vegetables and fruits thoroughly to remove any residues. Opt for produce grown without herbicides and pesticides whenever possible.

  3. Refrigerate Raw Pet Food: Keep refrigerators below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.5C) to inhibit bacterial growth. Follow the recommended time variables for refrigerating raw meat, poultry, and seafood for human consumption, and use raw pet food within 7 days.

  4. Freezing and Thawing: Freeze raw pet food for longer-term storage and thaw it in the refrigerator or in a bowl on the countertop. Avoid thawing raw pet food in hot or warm water, and never microwave it.

  5. Clean & Sanitize Prep Space: Always maintain a clean and tidy prep space. Sanitize countertops and all surfaces that come into contact with raw pet food using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher with a sanitized setting. Wash cutting boards, feeding bowls, and utensils thoroughly.

  6. Remove Uneaten Food: Store any leftover raw pet food in the refrigerator for the next meal. Do not leave raw food unattended and discard it if it has been left out.

  7. Clean Personal Hygiene: Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds after handling raw pet food, cleaning the prep area, and picking up pet stools. If your pet has a long beard that traps liquid, wipe it after eating to prevent bacterial spread.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure the safety of both your pets and your family when handling raw pet food. It is important to prioritize cleanliness and hygiene to minimize the risk of illness-causing bacteria spreading between pets and humans.
